An electronic cigarette, e-cig or e-cigarette is a device intended as alternative choice to smokers already smoking some form of tobacco. There are many types available to emulate the smoking of cigarettes, cigars or pipes. Other devices don't take on the look of an existing device at all such as the GG, Screw Driver or Janty Stick.

In most cases they are powered by batteries to provide a dose of nicotine by vaporising a solution that contains propylene glycol/nicoteen mix. The beauty of this compared to other nicotine replacement products is that it can provide a sensation close to inhaling actual tobacco smoke.

Due to the lack of rigorous, peer-reviewed studies the world health organisation doesn't recognise the electronic cigarette as a valid alternative to smokers. However most-all of the manufacturers claim it to provide none of the drawbacks of a traditional cigarette (referred to in the e-cig community as an "analogue"). Such claims include:

  1. No secondhand smoke
  2. No odour
  3. No carconogens
  4. No toxins
  5. No tar
  6. No carbon monoxide

Whilst some of these claims are true, only long term studies will prove the rest.
